Jean-François Richard
Jean-François RichardProfessor Emeritus, Université Paris 8, UFR 07 Key words:Problem solving, reasoning, modelling, cognitive diagnosticsResearch interests:J.F. Richard is interested in the model of reasoning in problem solving situations that assumes that the solution is a compromise between three types of constraints involving the interpretation of the situation, the subject's knowledge, and the goals and general action heuristics of daily life. A constraint is a rule that defines all possible actions, some which are permitted and some of which are forbidden. Restrictions stemming from several constraints can arise and, in certain cases, lead to barriers, or situations where no action is allowed. This is a deterministic model: seemingly chaotic aspects of problem solving come out of the interactions taking place between constraints. The resultant computer model leads to, for well-studied situations with all potential constraints identified, a diagnostic for rules for decisions, knowledge, and goals of the subject. Algorithms have been established to explore the domain of possible constraints: stable constraints (with order) and labile constraints (that appear and disappear). These algorithms reproduce the observed protocol of the subject's actions. This model has been applied to classic problems such as Hanoi and isomorphs, missionaries and cannibals... and is currently being used in professional training concerning work with press regulators in plasturgy who must regulate the press in order to correct product defaults. Another project aims to introduce modelling for arithmetic problem solving mechanisms. Favourite links:Bibliography:Giboreau, A., Urdapilleta, I & Richard, J.F.
