Research interests:
My research interests concern the cognitive processes involve in reading and comprehension of texts. More specifically my work focuses on the processes that allow readers to continually gain access to relevant and necessary information stored in long term memory - that is inactive information that was previously stated in the text as well as general world knowledge. My program of research first examines the factors that guide access to information of the episodic representation of the text. A second goal is to assess whether passive activation of the reader's knowledge can explain how inferences are made during reading comprehension.
Although these studies mainly treat narrative texts, they also apply to the mechanisms used when solving problems given through verbal directions. One research project aims to evaluate whether certain mistakes observed in arithmetic problem solving by elementary school students may result from difficulties in basic comprehension processes as anaphora resolution.
