The principle themes of Sandra Bruno's research center around a constructivist and developmental approach of the phenomenons behind knowledge acquisition and examine the relationship between reasoning by analogy and conceptualisation. She looks at reasoning by analogy as a differentiated ensemble of established inferences based on bringing together two situations. She has created a study paradigm using a simulation task that requires subjects to create analogies. She uses a case-study approach and qualitative analysis to examine the stages of reasoning. The goal is to "capture" the interaction between complex representations (in physical science) and analogical and metaphorical reasoning, to establish the role of realisation, and to reflect on how reasoning by analogy can be used in teaching.

Different aspects of how the results can be applied are clear: meaning, and symbolic and situational representations.

Analogies imply meaning that the subject may not even be conscious of; they offer representation and simulation. By comparing the work of reasoning by analogy, the pertinent aspects of the concept are shown.

This research can be applied to professional training questions, and to the areas of assessment and integrating new technologies.
