Résumé
Conducted 5 experiments which represent an extension of previous research on "intuitive statistics" but develop a new theoretical approach to an area typically studied with normative statistical models. A total of 135 undergraduates made judgments, ratings, and choices based on brief exposures to samples of numerical information concerning food prices. Independent variable manipulations included sample mean, sample size, sample variance, mean difference between pairs of samples, and differences in importance between pairs of samples. Response measures included numerical estimates of mean value and difference between means, ratings of degree of variability of numerical samples, and comparative ratings and preference choices of stores based on inspection of price increase information. In most cases simple algebraic models (e.g., averaging and subtracting models) fit the data quite well, validation was provided for the response scales employed, and subjective stimulus scale values were linearly related to actual numerical values.
