Guy Politzer a effectué ses premières recherches en didactique de la physique. Il a étudié l'information transmise oralement par l'enseignant au cours d'explications qualitatives de phénomènes ainsi que les préconceptions des élèves faisant obstacle à l'acquisition de nouveaux concepts. Son activité de recherche au CNRS a été consacrée au raisonnement humain. Contre l'approche théorique fondée sur la logique standard, il plaide pour une approche de type logique probabiliste intégrant les activités déductives et inductives, prenant en compte l'incertitude de l'information, la non monotonie et l'exploitation par l'individu de ses connaissances en mémoire à long terme. Il a appliqué la pragmatique du langage, en particulier la théorie de la pertinence, à l'analyse des constituants (termes logiques, propositions, arguments) des énoncés de la vie quotidienne et du matériel verbal utilisé dans les expériences de laboratoire. Concernant ces dernières il s'est intéressé à la représentation des tâches et aux croyances et intentions que participants et expérimentateur s'attribuent mutuellement. Dans le prolongement de cette approche, il a critiqué la méthodologie et les concepts de l'école "des heuristiques et des biais". Il a aussi travaillé à l'approche du raisonnement déontique et contractuel par les "schémas pragmatiques de raisonnement". Il a proposé un cadre théorique pour expliquer l'effet de "suppression" des conclusions dans le raisonnement conditionnel.Ses plus récentes recherches portent sur l'interprétation des énoncés conditionnels et aussi sur l'usage naturel des syllogismes.
