Annamaria Lammel

Annamaria Lammel's research stems from the comparative cultural cognitive psychology approach.  Within this approach lies the idea that human cognition is constructed in the psychogenetic sphere while constantly interacting with historic-cultural processes. Representations and knowledge are elaborated by the group and children gradually integrate them.  Knowledge accumulated over the course of history allows "superior" cognitive processes to be established that are unique to humans and that children put in place throughout their development.  Professor Lammel's research focuses on development and cognitive functioning in different cultural contexts -- Mexico (Totonaque Indians), Canada (Inuit), Hungary (rural populations, children), Argentina (populations from la Pampa), Indonesia (exploratory work with Baudis, Javas), France (children and adolescents from Paris and its surrounding suburbs -- and in several languages (Indo-European, Finno-Ugric, Amerindian).  These various research projects address cognitive processes such as categorisation, classification, conceptualisation, reasoning, theorisation, and problem solving strategies.  The different areas of knowledge used come from the physical world with subjects such as cosmogony, cosmology, climate, time, space, vegetation, and atmospheric pollution. Studying these domains has aided in the identification of the role of cultural context in the construction of representations and knowledge.
