Conferences 2004 - L. Léger

Visual and semantic discrimination in word detection

Speaker: Laure Léger
Laboratoire "Cognition et Usages", Université de Paris 8

Date: 24 May 2004

Summary: Many studies in the field of visual search have shown the effect of several visual factors detecting a particular target (in general, simple shapes or numbers and letters).
Our research examines both the effects of visual factors on word detection but also the effects of semantic factors such as the semantic distance between the target and its context and the commonality of the target. Exerimental results show how visual attributes are not equal from the point of view of word detection and semantic factors can have as much of an influence on detection. These results suggest a certain chronometricity in the processes that accompany this kind of task.
